Turf into pond

I've laid some turf up to the pond and decided to alter the edge slightly so that the turf rolls 'elegantly' into the water.

I know there's mixed opinion on this but was wondering whether I should put any other soil under the turf. I've just laid it on top of the liner at the moment.

Water level is very low at the minute due to the hot summer but it would usually be above the plastic grid in the picture.

Will that work ok or will it just perish with no soil under it?

I love the look of a grass edge up to a pond, but it is has problems - runoff being one, especially if you fertilize and the grass clippings flying into the pond to name another. And you're right, with no soil under the grass, it will not grow, especially if you get any kind of heat.

One month on and the turf in the pond seems to be doing very well. I haven't cut it at all yet. I have cut the grass around the pond once, but you can see how well it's doing. You can see there are two pieces of turf that I've laid into the pond. The piece with the large round stone on top has some play sand underneath it. I needed to reshape it as it was pulling the liner down a little bit at first. I also wanted to see if the sand would help the turf to establish in the water. The piece without the stone is simply laid straight onto the liner. Again, this seems to be doing ok at the moment. I'll keep posting updates for those that are interested. Particularly if it suddenly dies on me or something.

My resident frog seems to be happy with it, anyway.

I like it, it looks like it grew in naturally. I hope it keeps doing well, as it sure makes the pond pretty. Keep us updated on progress, if you don't mind. Thank you for the update.

That sure is some pretty green grass you have there! Good looking pond too!

I think I've landed lucky with the weather. I had to put a lot of turf down in 2-3 areas of the garden. Probably not the ideal time of year to do it, but we've had about a month or so of bucketing rain interspersed with hot, hot sun. So it's growing really well.

Almost a year on and here's an update on my turf. It's gone. Mrsclem and Lisa were correct, it just sucked water our of the pond and the came a soggy mess out of it.
Shame as it looked quite nice for a while. I've out rocks in at the moment and although I literally just threw them down it looks ok. I need to finish it off somehow.

Well, you tried! We've all experimented with ideas along the way - some work, some don't. But now you know!

I accidentally grew grass IN my pond - I brought a plant home that had a sweet little grassy bit in it and thought "oh, that's adorable!" So I let it grow. It grew and it grew and it grew... until this spring I realized it had grown out of the pond and was taking over. I spent several hours removing it and replanting the ground cover that was SUPPOSED to be there. But I could have just mowed it down, it was so lush and thick. Here's a picture of a section of it that I ripped out:

The root structure on this stuff was amazing. If it had stayed inside of the pond I would have left it alone as it was kind of pretty. But once it started taking over other territory it had to go!

Your pond is looking great! Thanks for the update!
