My neighbor brought me some goldfish out of his pond. He's getting rid of his goldies and going 100% koi. Anyway I told him I'd take some of them. I currently have them in a quarantine tank. 3 of these fish have these lumps on them. Neighbor says they been there about a year, don't seem to bother them and don't seem contagious.

I'm concerned about putting these guys in my pond with my healthy fish. I'm trying to research and thinking maybe fish pox? But I just don't know. Is there anything I can do for these guys? Of the 2 dozen he gave me, 3-4 are affected. Pic is the worst one.

Thanks so much!!

Looks like carp pox. It’s not actually contagious, so it’s up to you decide what to do. The fish can live a normal life.

looks like a tumor to me and i would put the fish in a baggie with some water place it in the freeze and the fish will go to sleep.

But I think a tumor would be isolated to just one fish....I have 3 and theres a few with this that neighbor kept. I think there are too many fish involved for it to be a tumor.

if i am not mistaken they are generally caused by poor water quality. But i am by no means an expert

Some fish have a genetic predisposition for susceptibiliy to carp pox, and yes, environmental factors can cause it to express. But, in general, it is cosmetic, and isn’t painful or debilitating to the fish (unless the location of the lesions on the body interfere with eating, etc.). Think of it like people warts, caused by a virus. Some people never get the first wart, yet some people can’t seem to get rid of them.

I’d go with tumors. Pox looks like white candle wax on the fish’s skin vs tumors will carry some of the fish skin pigment into the actual growth like your photos show.. As for multiple fish having it, are these all from the same genetic pool and therefore disposition?

Yes, they're all from the same pond. Was able to get a pic of another one. They all are acting normal. Can I put them in my pond once QT time done? Think it's contagious if it IS a tumor?
