Speaking over 27 years of using its equivulent i;e filter wool we hose it gently starting at the top and working our way to the bottom then turn it over from the bottom then spraying the now top of the filter wool working our way down again we do this around three times depending on how much detritus its caught .
If you want to kill off any algae weve found that if you leave it in brilliant sunshine lying on the grass for a few days then turning it over again any algae or muck left in it is bleached away by the sun.
then when it comes to cleaning the one in the filter youcan replace it with the sun bleached one and vica versa thus extending its life somewhat .

I lay mine out in the sun but have to watch I lost 3 pieces of it this last spring to the wild turkeys here .I caught them running away with it and man can they run .I have had birds ripping it apart trying to take it away also .I guess they don't know the difference between the ones I give them and the ones I am still using .Usually my one eyed owl that lives in a tree behind my house gets first shot at it .He has a nice warm nest .
