So, I have a small container pond with a few rice fish in it. I was a little shy about more plants at first, but I was wondering if you guys knew any aquatic plants that would do good in zone 6b? I’m looking more into plants that are fully submerged since I cover the pond in the winter. It is bare bottom right now, but if you guys also have any recommendations for substrates that would also be good.

Hello and welcome!

I have (I hope I spell it right…) anacharis in my pond year round. I’m in zone 8, but we have had some bad cold snaps and the plants have thrived trough all of it. There’s just a mass of it. So much so that I occasionally have to “weed” some out. I think one of our members here has a thriving population of hornwort. Sorry, but I’m into the common names for stuff.

I had to look up Rice fish, never heard of them before.
Anyways I like Parrots Feather plants. They sprawl and will not grow tall and if you have a cover it won't hurt them as they will come back in nice in Spring.
I keep mine in a pot of 100% clay kitty litter w/no added ingreds. Hornwort is a nice plant too and grows fully underwater but I can't get it to stay alive in my pond. Others here have no problem growing it even in cold winters as it comes back. I like Anacharis too but my fish eat it all too fast. I think if I had a lot maybe they could not keep up w/it?

I am 6b or a take your pick.

Anacharis, hornwort. Hardy lilies, iris, pickerel week, parrots feather, water willow.

Some of this grows above water. But cut down during winter. So under water.

Most all of them have roots you can put in pots. Just anchor them down good w/maybe some flat rocks on top to keep fish from digging stuff up. Floating Heart plants have little roots and they just float around loose on top of your pond. They look like a tiny version of water lilies w/tiny yellow flowers.
