a customer came to me with a horror story of seagulls cleaning out his pond,
Good to know. I have seen seagulls just recently in my neighborhood (and I am not next to any large body of water).

This is not encouraging. Urban does not mean safe in so many other contexts, I had hoped that maybe with ponds I could get a bye.
You will until one of those sharp eyed suckers spots it.

they had a small pond right under the window in the front yard.
Same thing here - while walking my dog I saw a heron standing next to someones front porch and only a few feet from the sidewalk. When I got close, the heron flew to the garage roof, waited for me to pass the house, then went right back. I talked to the owners a few days later and they said they were missing their one small goldfish which was in this small, heavily planted preformed pond. They were amazed the heron had found the pond. I was too. You couldn't see it until you walked right up on it.

All they need to see is the reflection of the water when flying over. I watch them pausing in the air as they fly when they spot our pond. Some see the net and keep going other ones land to check it out.

I see them by the Dan river here but I guess they stay where the food source is good and I hope they stay there .We have lots of owls here but they seem to not want to bother with the pond .I guess to many field mice to fill them up

We have owls and hawks they all ignore the pond. Even before the netting.

i don't light the pond at night for that reason, makes the fish to easy to see for the night critters.
