I have given my goldfish cheerios just before I cut off feeding for the winter and for their first feeding after the water warms up enough (this was all from recommendations from forum members… this place is so great👍)
I don’t give them much though as I think they need better stuff. I just grind a few up between my thumb and fingers and toss it in.
Mine get a bunch of Italian Parsley tied with Jute and they strip the stalks clean within minutes...They get this almost every night since my pond is on the small side (about 900 - 1000 gallons) and my shubies are getting very big ....Every afternoon they get Dainichi pellets and Tetra Vibrance sticks....So far everyone is very healthy looking and acting🤞

My fish also like to eat watermelon! This is something I never expected! I have been feeding them fish food from the beginning. One time my friend recommended me to feed them watermelon, and since then, I have been feeding them watermelon.

My goldfish only get fed on Fridays, fish day. They snack on plants, bugs etc. the rest of the week. I find if you feed them too often they poo more and lots of muck collects on the bottom of my pond.

My goldfish and Big Koi love Dog food, small breed made right here in Alberta. Been feeding them this for 20 years at least. They all very healthy too.
I have a big problem with finding small breed dog food for my chihuahuas . I guess because this is hunting country , everyone has big breed dogs . I had to go down to Riedsvill NC to get a bag of their food 2 weeks ago .

@callingcolleen1 , good to. see you ! How have you and your ponds been ?
Been pretty good. Ran away from civilization for a while after my mom passed and never even went to my dentist for several years as part of my "running away". Turns out no cavities in years since doing extreme Keto. After my mom passed discovered I was a raging diabetic with A1C of 13.5!! Extreme Keto diet and got off all medication in just 3 months and now not even close to diabetic anymore. I eat mostly just meat. Fatty meat and peanuts in the shell and thats it. No veggies or fruit out of ny growing season. I will eat raspberries only when they are in my backyard growing in my season. I have come to conclusion that humans are Not supposed to eat out of our growing season.. Lost a bunch of weight and ran off with the "milkman'from work (can't make this up). We been living together for almost 4 years now. Hiding was therapy for me. I felt very bad leaving my old ponds, hubby and dogs but it is better for me and my ex. We get along much better now and he is taking good care of my old ponds.

Good for you on taking charge of your life and doing what's best for you. I have not been to the dentist since COVID started since the dentist cancelled my appt way back then. I will go again someday to see how teeth survived. Glad to hear you and your ex are still friendly and you can still visit your old beautiful ponds and pup! When apple's are ripe and fall off the trees here I pick them up to eat when our walking or riding my bike in Summer. Rabbits get the leftovers. I do love the carnivore diet but I wonder if there is such a thing as too much butter as I seem to eat a lot of it?
Looking forward to your part of the Canadian country to join us one day hopefully or maybe just fix your country to do better for your people. Won't get into politics tho as it's big no, no here, lol! Glad you are back w/us!

I see there was a recent thread about fish food.

It got me thinking there should be a sticky listing things people feed to their fish other than designated fish food. If there is already a sticky, I apologize. Maybe post up that link if it exists.

I know some people feed peas, cheerios, watermelon.

Maybe we can start a list of what is ok and how to feed each item.
For example, peas...I think they should be raw and I think there was mention of pulling the skin off. How do you pull the skin off a tiny pea? Or maybe they weren't raw, maybe frozen peas?
My KOI love roman lettuce, I take out the center core and the love the leaves. I give them the outside and rough leaves and keep the center for my salad. I also feed them Cherrios cereal in the spring and fall. I grow duckweed for them also they love the stuff and clean it up fast. When I raised them in a aquarium I feed them french cut green beans.
