What do you mean by turning both directions?
In most races, NASCAR and INDY racing only turn left on a oval track although both are starting to do more road track racing. NASCAR drivers typically have the most experience racing on oval tracks, so when they run into a road course event, some teams have brought in a sportscar driver. That seems bad form to me.

Indy drivers seem better at transitioning between oval and road course, Indy cars are open wheeled and to the casual observes look the same as F1 cars. Open wheel driver are more likely to have started racing gocart at age 10 and to have bounced back and forth between road and oval courses as they grew up.
