Gluing PVC pipe

Just a quick question, can you use plumbing cement to glue PVC pipe? Is it safe for the fish?

I've been doing it for the past year as my "turtle pond" has a false floor supported by PVC. I never thought about it, as DrCase commented.

OK, I've been gluing PVC pipe for better than 30 years and I had no idea what "cement" was. So I Googled it and sure enough, in big letters, on every brand I've ever used is "cement". Never noticed.
