Ive been feeding brine shrimp twice a day, & i have powdered up a quality flake food that I give them when ever i can.
There bellys always has something in them.
The ones I have outside seem to be doing fine on there own, I dont see any dead ones.
I'll try the decapsulating,
Thanks guys.

Just a idea I've just tried, seems to be working for me.
I grabbed a old pepper mill, turned the adjustment to small, place small sinking trout pellets in it & grind them into powder for the fry.
I just add water to them & drip it into the water with a turkey baister.
Just a idea.... it should work with flake & freez-dryed shrimp to?
Also I adjust it up for bigger pieces for the 1" young. Works good.

(rinse the pepper out first or the fish sneez!)

When I scoop up my regular fish food, I seem to always have powder in the bottom of the can after feeding. I've been giving some of that powder to my fry. Of course at this stage, I think they'll eat just about anything!

I know this is "taboo" (lol) but my kids & I like the chuby little ryukin goldfish, & I have 5 of them in my koi pond. Now ive noticed a few fry with a "double" or a fan tail.
These were with the eggs that i pulled directly from the pond, not the ones I hand stripped.
Is it possible these are cross bred hith the koi? Or more likely just ryukin eggs mixed with koi eggs?
I guess time will tell, hope there ryukin, not mutants.

All my fry are doing very well, eating & growing, faster than the first hatch.(warmer water maybe?)
The ones outside in the dirty algae water< that I'm neglecting >seem to be slightly bigger though!
I am going to have to do a cull before there 1" big if this many survive, there are simply to many for me to raise.
Any info on which ones to "chuck" would help, as far as solid colours, or size. I will of course toss the odd shapes & ones with bad fins.

Yes the powder @ the bottom of the bag is the same idea, i just dont have enough of it. & yes they seem to eat up anything that will fit in there mouth! :)
These trout pellets I'm feeding them may acount for the faster growth also.

When I started ponding I was told not to keep goldfish with koi.

Now I do as I please. The key is to watch the fish to see if anybody is getting harassed outside of spawning.

Goldfish and koi can cross but chances are they are either goldfish or koi but not a mix.

If you have a lot the easiest way is to do a negative cull. Decide how may you want to keep and pick out that many discarding the rest.

So its been some time since my last up date.
I have probably a thousand or so fry still alive, I haven't had to cull any out yet (other than deformed), mother nature has done her part & decreased the numbers in each tank I have.
Next year I will be ready with a good size pond full of green water. This is where I've had my best results.

Can anyone tell me if the straight "silver" fry will change colour or are they to be tossed?
I have many solid silvers, but also have lots of yellows & yellows with dark spots. They range in size from 1/2" up to 1 1/2". Still to early to tell?

Other than culling for defects early on, I do not cull until 4 or 5 months down the line. If you have room to grow them to a few inches in length. Koi can change colors a lot. Yellows can become orange. Orange can go to yellow or red. Black can recede or expand. Same with areas of white. Silver can add other colors to it. Unless you are trying to only grow out certain types of koi, let them grow out and see how they change.

I'm of that mind as well, I do as I please as I'm not harming the fish nor the industry (ie; selling the fishes). One thing though, from what I can tell, the goldfish and koi were bred down from very different genus and species of carps so that off-springs would be unlikely and any off-spring would likely be sterile... kinda like a mule (horse and donkey cross).

If that is the case, then those surviving won't propagate more fry. I hope it's not like what the character Dr. Malcolm said in Jurassic Park, "life will find a way". :)

I have had about 10 koi, some 15 inches long, for about 7 years. They do not spawn. The comets and shubunken have done so.

I thought it might the water clarity and I fixed that with a bog and UV light.

Still not koi spawn.

How do I check male versus female so I can get the opposite of what I have and see if they spawn?

Anyone know of a fertility specialist to increase their chances?

My pond has 6000 gallons and I have a slow flowing pump that moves water into the bog through a UV light.

David - you are about in the same zone that I am in. My koi have already spawned this year, although this is one year I have not seen them spawn. I can tell because my females have gotten their girlish figures back.

Have you noticed any of your fish getting larger in girth in the late spring/summer?

My koi have never spawned -- that I have noticed -- in the 7-9 years I have pampered them. They just come running when they voices hoping I bring them food pellets.

I cannot even tell which koi are male, female or transgendered.... let alone any girlish figures. They are just gluttons. My own theory is that they are all gay.

If I could tell whether or not I have all males or females I can get a few of the opposite sex of child bearing age and see if that works...

Unless I can find a fertility clinic first..

They say the pectoral fins are a different shape on a female koi than on a male koi. Also that the bodies of the female koi are more rounded and the males have more of a torpedo shape. In spite of this, I have found it difficult to figure out which were male, female, or transgendered. The only way I have been able to actually confirm which are males in my pond and which are females is when I have seen them spawn.
