because ive been asked where my filter is located...i'm posting these pix,
the falls are built around the filter, its the oval area in the center with hiacynths growing in it. the filter has a 10" waterfall weir about 6" out, with an extension about 18 to 20" long added on. i took the top rock off the weir and extension to show it.

venturis work by the speed of the water rushing by a tube in the water line. it creats a vaccuum and draws in air.i have one from my tetrapond filter, so i use it.. you can actually see quite a bit of air jetting from them.

Can it be DIY or do you have to buy a kit or something?
And are they worth it?

Some more info at the end of this on his take of the above link

And another:

Another

I had an idea to use the heat gun to heat up the PVC and pull it to make a real venturi but it seems the hose will work so hopefully I can get it to work.

And if you wanted to spend some money search for venturi injector

I think he is saying you can just stick a tube or even 2 down the throat of the pipe, but really this explains how to make a real venturi. I didnt read it all but look at the pics
http://leisure.prior-it.co.uk/diy-build-pond-venturi.shtml

i gave a general discription of its function and an accurate one... i would of gotten into more detail later if asked, i had to go. of course you cant just stick hose(s) in a tube.you shouldnt speculate on another mans thoughts..

Hey Dr.Dave,

Here are some pictures of the trays I used. I used a jigsaw to cut them in circles and I used them in my 55 gallon 'Doc Filter'. One was used to hold the filter media off the bottom and the second was used on top the media to keep it in place.

The last pics turned out a bit small so I've resent them larger.

You know, one thing im worried about a little is that in the new design the lower lip is much lower than the older designs.
the one I got:

The older one:

I guess this is why I am haing to use so much more filter media which could be good, but I just done know if the lower height is good for the actual setteling of the crap. howerver I already cut my grate, so I would have to get another if I wanted to raise it...

Just a heads up, another alternatie to using scrubbies would be floor buffer pads, same materail and can be bought in different densities.......my be an exact fit for some of the barrel filter designs.

I’m thinking of building a filter like this for my 1500G pond. I’m planning to use a 2000 or 2500GPH pump. The question I have though is how do you calculate the retention time for the media and what is a good amount of time. I’m thinking of making a waterfall weir in mine but it will be maybe 16in across to help with the higher water flow. Also does this filter keep the algae at bay? I thought u really needed a UV to do this well. But I guess with enough plants it can be ok as well?

Thanks all
Josh

the weir on this filter will easily handle 2500 gph.. this filter is 70 gals i would go for the 100 gal with that much flow, that will give your water 2&1/2 minutes in the filter
