We dug ours by hand but we were lucky that it was all soft dirt... it was a old garden bed and i think there may have been a septic tank there years ago and when they got rid of it they filled it in with garden dirt .. it was so soft it was like a hot knife cutting through butter .. didnt reach any kind of clay till about 5 feet down .. i think our pond is about 4,000 gallons .. if not more ..
There was only the 3 of us to dig also ... probably took out about 5 pick up loads out if not more ..

My husband and SIL with a little help from me ( a little ) dug mine by hand in two weeks with two shovels. They weren't happy about it, but they did it and by the end I thought to myself (I can't ask them to do anything else for me for a really long time or they may snap). Our soil is sandy loam, we did not hit any rocks or clay to 36" deep the edges are about 4" above grade so it is 40" deep over all.

If I want another pond some equipment will have to be rented since I think I have got all the digging out of them I can for a lifetime.

It is really cool when you see the birds in the pond or stream taking a bath. There are a few areas they go in mine, but can never catch them when the camera is in hand (or without my daughter scaring them away first :) )

lol they should consider themselves lucky, my soil is all clay as soon as you get 6" down and full of rocks. and I dug mine by hand :) but mine is definitely smaller than yours, the really deep part is only 4'x7' or so and above that it is about 9'x12' or so and thats only down 12-18". it took awhile, but was fun, was easier to dig the clay when it was wet. but I say go with your idea, rent the excavator like todd did and let your husband have some fun!

I have a little pond in the front yard and I have sticks and logs and things for them to bath better, there is also two bird baths near by in my other flower garden, and there sometimes is a long line up to bath, love to watch them from the front window.

I got clay too, and when I dug mine it was rock hard and heavy. Nice thing about clay is that the sides of the pond don't erode so bad like sand. My friend had this real deep pond with selfs for plants, but the self just sort of slid away, her soil was mostly sand.

Hows the weather on the Bay? Lots of hot heat? I could use some more heat, its supposed to rain again soon in the Hat.

Tmann your pond is very nice every since I have been part of this forum I have always admired it. I was wondering what size of pump do you have running your big waterfall? Thanks

Thanks everyone!

I am reading this forum from my iPhone since I am out of town currently , so sorry for getting back so late.

My pump is an external sequence 7200 whIch pumps water to my filter fall pump, bog, the long creek and the short creek. So it feeds 4 different outlets, the two big ones are to the waterfall and the smallest is the short creek which has very little flow just enough to keep it fresh.

Any more questions just let me know. My yard has made a comPlete transformation in the last 8 years, you can check out my showcase there Is a link in my signature.

Yeah I did. 12 years ago my wife and I went to Hawaii. One of the days we were going driving on the road to Hana, stopped at this overlook and there were all these small rocks stacked about 2 feet high, they were all over the place; almost as if everyone who visited did this. It was pretty cool looking. I am going to look for smaller rocks and do a few more throughout.
