Can you just put some of those rosy reds in a big container w/ non-moving water w/ plants in it? Was thinking of using some to eat mosquito's in my water tubs. There would be no filter or pump in there w/ them just rainfall fills and in Summer topped off w/ a hose using well water.

they seem to survive anything jw. They would do fine. Better than in a pond with big fish!

I think that is the big deal about the Rosey Reds, that they eat mosquito larvae, JW, so they will be happy to take care of your bug problem. And, you don't have much worry about things freezing, so they would do well in your container it sounds like. Look for them as feeders, too, in stores. Pet stores will charge more, bait stores less. LOL Same fish. BUT, pet stores may have redder/pinker versions than the bait stores would have.
My sister that has a koi pond in AZ said she was really upset how they multiplied, as with the inches of them in her pond, it added up to too many inches of fish, so she had someone come and net them all out. LOL I figured koi would eat them, too, but I guess not all of them, and they breed too fast and dart to hide, and a lot of them lived.
BTW, my sister in Phoenix is moving back to WI. Her husband's job got eliminated, so they are moving back to WI so he can take another higher position with GE. So, if anyone knows of someone looking for a nice house with a koi pond in AZ (historic neighborhood, her house is historic, I guess she says), let me know!

Nope nope nope..............sell mine first! But my tenants want to buy the house, we are going to do a wrap loan. If it works out lol. They have been there 3 years and love the house, the husband loves the 3000sq ft garage, he collects cars.

Well darn the snow stopped, we got a nice 1.5 inches or so. Pretty while it lasted, now melting. Freezing rain and sleet coming next.

This flower is still blooming, supposedly rated just down to zone 8, heavy frost, snow, ice, below 10 degrees.

Last year we never got this cold, the bubbler did just fine. It just managed to get a little ice on it (in looking again, I think the tube into the water iced over and started shifting, made the diffuser move and float) and floated up to the surface. I sank it again yesterday, tied to a huge rock, it is doing fantastic, big hole in the big pond ice, small hole in the lotus tub ice.

I have a 3/4" air hose that goes into the pond and then splits to go to the different diffusers. To hold the hose down I ran it through a house brick (one with holes) every couple of feet or so. Works great.

Unbelievable how that flower is still blooming, Addy. Care to share what it is? The real test will be if it survives the winter, but blooming in the snow, I'd say that will be a yes!

http://www.bloomingadvantage.com/Erysimum-Poem-Lilac.html

Erisimo Poem Liliac According to the plant tag it is rated to zone 8, we are 6b-7, does not tolerate heavy frost, it has had heavy frost, ice, snow, still blooming in the snow. Will see how it does after this ice storm we are having today. Low temp this year has been below 10 so far.

per the net blooms spring summer, .............it has been blooming since I put it in last summer. I am surprised! I check it after every storm, it tickles me to still see those pretty purple flowers. I have the Apricot Twist wall flower, bloomed great all summer orange pink flowers, has not done a thing since winter hit, planted right next to the other one that is still blooming.

Well, Addy, if your lilac survives the winter, you need to pollinate or graft or whatever you would do to grow some more and sell them! Your plant may be the exception to the rule. Did you buy it locally? If so, seems funny that a local nursery would even have something that was not rated for the area. I'm hoping they had it because it was proven to survive the winter. We'll be waiting to hear more come about March and April! I'm hoping that lilac surprises us all!
