Pond sludge

I have read many times about people putting many hours into removing pond sludge from the bottom of a pond. However presumably if the pond is intended for wildlife this sludge is beneficial. Do I need to remove the bottom mud from my wildlife pond? Any help appreciated.

I don’t think so, not for a wildlife pond. That sludge is actually part of the pond’s ecosystem.
