Yeh there was nothing growing right under the black walnut but around it there were some maples that I guess were self starters and were only 4 or 5 ft tall .I'm not sure how long the salt would last before it just leeched into the soil .

I sure do feel much better. For some reason, I was sure that roots would ruin my pond-to-be before I started. Thanks for everyone's input.
