you will have to root trim your plants and that is why my outlets are on top ,but T pipe brings water from the bottom and then I have a liner around the tank that if it goes to the over flow pipe it drains right back into the pond .I root trim my plants every 2 months I have 2 filters done the same

I run mine all winter I just put the pond heater over top of my pump on the coldest days and it has worked .You are farther south than I am so it should work for you .I have had the best of luck with my grasses since colleen told me how well they clean the water .I started with 1 grass and have divided it the last couple of years and now have 8 plants and the fountain grass goes in the basement for the winter .

I decided to stop the bog this weekend just because I'll not be around for a while to watch them. Today will be super cold and I'm still running the pump, to see how it'll do. If it doesn't freeze then when I come back from vacation I'll start my pump again. I think I have sweet flag rush, should be good too :) couldn't find any grass when I went to the plant store. I have about 3 kind of plants in one container so I think that's enough for now...giving it space to take over :)

Ok, so last night it got cold to around 15F and my lotus tub froze about 1-2 inches thick. I kept my pond running and no frozen water there.. YEY! not even on the top where there's only half an inch of water running. My experiment went well :)
