We have gotten as cold as -6F here and not any colder and that is only for a couple days. All our weather here is pretty mild, just lots of rain. I used pine needles to cover mine. Think I have heard of people using fern fronds too as they repel water. I had mine planted on a mound first and it did ok. Now I have moved it next to the house in a south facing spot to get more warmth from the house..............maybe

They are usually in 1 gallon pots and only about 2 feet tall, the last time I saw them there was at the end of may or beginning of june, they retailed for $14.99 I think.

I love the tropical look too. Love the Chinese Windmill Palms............supposed to be hardy here but when they are young you need to baby them and cover them or they will suffer from the cold. I have one out of 3 that made it so far for a few yrs. Did not cover it last yr and it suffered on it's fronds but now is getting new ones. Maybe this one has finally made it for the long run..............we'll see.

JW how far do you cut yours back and do you cut in the fall or spring?

I don't cut mine back at all. I leave the dead leaves on to help cover the roots in the winter. Mine always dies all the way to the ground. This year it's taking a long time to grow big cuz of the cool, wet Spring we had...............and it's cool and rainy right now............bah humbug
