Yes is a normal string algae bloom. It might go away on its own, but I've never let it go that long. Some people have had luck with hydro peroxide, others have had good luck with kitty litter. I used a chemical that was fish safe and didn't harm my plants. One treatment and my string algae was dying off in 2 days and it hasn't come back. It all depends on what you want to use and are comfortable with doing.

the algae is so bad that daily i need to take the skimmer net out to clean it as its caked with string algae. this normal?
Normal for your pond...today.

If you're removing string algae from the water surface and it's not attached to anything, just floating, that would be dead and dying string algae.
