Pecan;
I've seen the method you describe used several times here in Ontario (zone 5) with great success. The bogs were between 2 1/2' and 3' deep, filled with a mixture of garden soil and clay, with from 4" to 6" of water over the soil. The folks who wholesale to us simply place a tuber on top of the soil and weigh it down with a small stone or two. The stones can be removed once the tuber anchors itself. As far as folds in the liner, the growing ends CAN get trapped in them and die, but once the plant is growing well there should be enough growth so that you probably wouldn't miss one or two. The lotus survive our winters in these bogs, so you shouldn't have a problem. I'll have to get some pictures of these set-ups once they start flowering.

Great Haro! That was my initial idea... I wanted to make the pond kind of like just a large lotus container and leave it in there year round.

I wonder if there is some sort of tape, kind of like duct tap I could run down the folds before filling so the tips don't grow into them....

You will just need to make sure your folds are folded over in the clockwise direction, then tell your lotus that they are only allowed to grow in the clockwise direction. If they don't listen you may need to :chair: them around a bit. :cheerful: Or you can try this http://www.petmounta...ct/11442-522520

Here is an update on my lotus.

These two pics are of the lotus that I planted several weeks ago, it also has a small lily growing with it.

These two pics are of the ones that I planted on saturday, as you can see they are starting to sprout. I just laid them on the kitty litter.

Ok went to check on my lotus plants and one is very unusual it has blackish purple leaves .I did not want to pull it out but the leaf that breaks the surface is blackish purple and the ones under the water coming up are the same color .All the other lotus I planted from one pond are green leafed and this lotus I got from another pod I bought at a flower shop and it was only 50 cents .Is it really a lotus, pod looks the same as the other pods I got .I took pics but have to upload them ,not sure how clear they are .

So if I opt to gets seeds from Michaels crafts rather than tubers, how do I know if they are hardy to our climate? Since not all lotus's are?

I guess really you don't know .I know there are people who sell them on e -bay .I would guess it is just a risk you take .I bought a thing of them from a flower shop and have no clue either .if you buy a tuber how can you be 100 % sure also .

If I bought tubers from my local koi guy, i can say they are hardy, because he has a lotus pond, keeps them out year round and sells tubers from there. Maybe I will try both seed and tuber...

I would really like to do something like this in a wine half barrel on our patio. Anyone have a good suggestion on a good and affordable solar pump? I saw some on Walmart.com http://www.walmart.com/ip/Unique-Ar...h-Rotating-Holder-and-Brushless-Pump/13270113 and http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sunjet-150/10842756 but have no experience with them. Not sure we want to invest the electricity for a regular even though we have a small statuary already, not sure we could place it in the yard without extension cords :.(
