Water Hawthorn in the summer

Last spring someone told me that Water Hawthorn pots could be pulled out and let to dry during the summer. In the fall they would come back stronger. I was skeptical but gave it a try. I left the pot sitting in the shade all summer in the desert heat. Then, a couple weeks ago I dug the tuber out and dropped it into the water. Pretty soon it starts growing again! I guess that in their native climates they go dormant in this way when the rivers/lakes dry up in the summer. Anyway, I'm anxious to see if it grows stronger this winter.

I thought mine was a goner too and it all of a sudden made a great comeback. It's planted in just a pot of kitty litter w/ rocks on top to keep the spoiled brat goldfish from digging it all out!

I might try it again, really love the smell of it. They said it spreads a lot, wish mine had.

I think it likes it here cuz we have lots of mild, cooler weather. It does not like too much heat but heard them say it goes away in heat and comes back when cool. Stayed growing and blooming in my pond all this Summer and still doing so now.

It is a prolific seeder. I ended up with little ones growing all over the place last spring. Only one of them near the stream survived the summer, though. For some reason mine never gave off much scent. I wish it would.

Mine seeded and sprouted too Tim but don't see any babies anywhere that made it to growing any bigger. We'll see if any of the sprouts show up next Spring. I can't smell mine from a distance. Maybe you have to have tons of them for that to happen.
