Like everyone else I picked some up at the store last week and put them in water. They are growing roots and I plan on putting them in a barrel without any kind of planting. Just let them float in there and eat off the nutrients in the water.

Wow, we really got a thread going on this. Glad you all were able to find some at market and those who haven't I hope the produce manager obliges! Sissy, please don't hate me too much - LOL!! I have to confess that I never shopped there until about a year ago. The store by me is enormous and confusing. They have aisles in every imaginable direction. The layout is crazier than if you put all the major airport runways together. I finally took a deep breath and went in. I much prefer Trader Joe's as I can make my way around 3 aisles much easier, but no one beats the selction and prices of SR.

Now back toe the watercress. Yes, mine does look different. I just have it free floating. I will have to take some pics of bee balm I planted last year. I bought 6 from home depot- all looked the same. Now they are allgrowing and the 2 closest to the house have entirely differnt leaves. They look more like the leaves of a Kalanchoe and less like the purple/green fuzzy leaves of the bee balm. I know the soil closer to the house seems very damp and more claylike, but to make the plants change that much?

I found some in one of our stores here today but didn't buy it cuz it was all wilted and ugly looking like it was old and unwanted. It was $1.78 a bunch. I'll check back another time and maybe they will have a nice fresh shipment. I went to 4 stores and only that one had any  I may just pick some out of the ditches here and live dangerously..............I'm not gonna eat it and I'll make sure that there are no cows around

I had some bee balm in my garden several years ago and went crazy everywhere, so I pulled it all out and it still comes up every year cant seem to get rid of it.

Soak it in a mild bleach solution, the other thing that works is put it in water totally covered with dish detergent, let it soak for a hour or so, I do this with picked flowers that are bug covered before I bring them in the house, kills the bugs. then rinse and put in pond

So either of those solutions won't harm the plants eh? How much bleach per water and for soap also? Don't want to overdo it :bouncycig:

No problem if buying at the store but could have liver flukes if you pick it in the wild where cows are nearby :bouncycig:

When i am attempting to kill the bugs on flowers I put in a few 3-4 good squirts of detergent in the water. The bleach around 1/4 cup if not less per gallon of water. bugs don't like it.

I have let them soak for an hour plus to make sure the bugs are dead.

Hi Top! You are South Jersey, if my memory is correct. I am in North Jersey. Many folks here use the big W, Home Depot or Lowes. I bought a few nice plants at the super market, beautiful calla lillies for 6.99 each. Bulbs from Walmart for Elephant ears, still waiting for a sprout though! See if there is a garden center with aquatics, for floaters, or check craigslist, ebay and hte such. Just be wary on the sellers. My pond has no shelf built into it, so it makes for interesting planting. I always look for perennials. Good luck and welcome to the forum. Oh yes and buy some watercress at the supermarket!
