I would go with the second one, cleaning all those sponges would be a real pain. I am sure they would get full of stuff. imho

500 bio balls wont fill a bit more than a 5 gal bucket????

which im expecting to have withing the 55 gal barrel.

Koikeeper, i dont know about the strapping im not sold on it... do we have actual people on here that have been using them for some time now.

The bio balls are 1.5 x 1.5 inches, you will have to figure out the volume they will fill.
