No the plants grow better after a frost and have sweeter sprouts after frost .My plants in NJ were over 6 years old before ground hog ripped the plants out and stole them

Here's what our pond looks like now.

030-Nov_11.jpg

That picture was when I put the Sunbubble over the pond on November 16th. It has actually been doing a good job...almost too good. The water started to get so warm I thought I was going to have to feed them again! Throughout December the water temps have been in the low to mid 40's. The last few days, daytime temps have been in the teens to low 20's with single digits at night. The water was still 40 yesterday afternoon, but we are in for a stretch of single digit nights and low to mid teen days for the next 5-6 days. Most of these days are supposed to be sunny.

Here's a pic from just a few minutes ago. That is not snow, but a thick, thick icy frost on the inside of the Sunbubble from the moisture hitting the plastic surface in such low temps.

I had to chime in on the brussel sprout conversation. My wonderful neighbor brought me one of these for Thanksgiving and another for Christmas dinner:

IMG_3444.JPG

He leaves them in the garden and cuts them right before he brings them over - they are better than any I have ever bought in the store! These were cut on December 24 after several good cold snaps. So sweet and tender. We toss them in olive oil and salt and pepper and roast them in the oven for 10-12 minutes at 425 degrees. SOOOO good! Sometimes I will chop up some bacon or garlic and add that to the pan. One of our family favorites. And I never thought I would say that! My mom used to make them when we were kids but she would boil them until they were good and dead - TERRIBLE. Same with asparagus - she cooked it until it was gray and slimy... we hated it! Now it's one of our favorite vegetables.

Funny story - when my neighbor brought these over, we had some men here working and one of the younger guys happened to be standing by the front door. He came to tell me there was "a man at the door with a cactus". I said "a cactus huh? Well weirder things have happened!" Then I saw my neighbor at the door with the brussels sprouts - we had a good laugh over that one! And the young guy learned what brussels sprouts look like when they grow!

Guppies Still alive and Outside in temperatures as low as minus 40 below!! They were covered with cheap plastic dome and old blankets and snow. Two fish tank heaters made this possible and kept water at about 70 degrees.
I know, Crazy but there they were, still outside and alive when I checked on them today!

Christmas eve night was snowy here. It didn’t stick around long, though. Also, a barred owl vistied our pond in late December. A beautiful bird - but it ate five of our comets. I wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t caught her (or him) in the act one night. I looked it up on YouTube and it turns out this type of owl Is in videos across the US snatching pond fish. I added a light under the owl’s tree perch and hung some holographic tinsel there. No more owl, for now anyway.

Wow that's awesome! I once had a big snowy owl fly very low right over my ponds at night, I just happened to look up at the right time and wondered why it flew so low right over my ponds... They are very beautiful predator birds, wings so soft they make no noise, and eyes in front of head make them the perfect predator like us!
