Seems strange that it can be getting dark by you, Sissy, when the sun is still up here. My daughter is in UT, and she tells me the same thing. LOL
Gorgeous day here today. Mid to upper 60's and sunny, even though a bit windy. Saw a pair of garden snakes around my ponds while I was messing around with them, and took several videos. One video, the snake almost slithered right over my bare toes in flip flops! I was ready for it had he done so, and would not have moved. They are VERY docile and social snakes. :) Here are a few pics i took of the first snake, then saw another one within 2 minutes in different spot, so had to be different snake.

Lots of people hate snakes, you're not alone, Sissy. I once "saved" a huge black snake that had gotten into neighbor's breezeway and could not get out. It was over 4' long. The neighbor lady (younger than me, but PETRIFIED of snakes ...) begged me to come kill it. I told her I would remove it from her breezeway, but I would not kill it. She said as long as I took it far far away, that would be ok. I relocated it to my barn. :)

The more snakes I see the happier I am, they do a great job killing mice, moles etc.

Nice to see rain in the forecast rather then winter mix or snow. The temps are bouncing between 20's at night to 40's day, then up to 63, then back down.............. But no SNOW!

Whew, glad the snow is gone for you. It has been below freezing once last week, since I heard the frogs chirping last weekend for the first time, so as the saying goes, we need two more hard frosts or ice on the puddles before Spring is officially here to stay. I prefer for those two frosts to be this week, so it's all over with in March, though! Temps mainly in the 50's and 30's this coming 10 days. I loved yesterday, today only mid 50's. Time to clean inside my house, have company coming this afternoon to view my ponds, and learn about building her own. I'm going to help, and very excited!!!

My wife is petrified of snakes. She was watching TV downstairs one night, while I was upstairs sleeping. She come in screaming there was a snake in the living room. I went downstairs, and it quickly slivered under the couch. I went back upstairs and said you're all set honey, and went back to sleep.

Oh, that's sooooo cruel, Mike! I would have been laughing at you doing that, but I just bet she locked herself in the bedroom, stuffed something at the door, etc. so it could not get in there with you. LOL I've known people who were so afraid of mice they had to cover a dead mouse in a trap, have someone else carry it out. Lots of phobias out there. I'd say my only phobia is buzzing insects that sting, mainly wasps and hornets, although this site has taught me to be patient and watch, instead of swat and run! ;)

I have been stung enough, since bee keeping, we now work in the hives without worrying about being stung. Part of the bee work. Worse thing you can do is swat at them, best you can do is let them land on you and ignore them.

Now wasps...........totally different story, those suckers are just nasty, mean bugs.

People who hate snakes are horribly misunderstanding them, or judging them by appearance rather than their attitudes.
Snakes are no different than any other small wild animal. It'll go about its business trying to survive. If it gets attacked or feels threatened, it'll run away fast as lightning. They're wimps. Very few will stand their ground, and the ones that do only do it because you stumbled on them too quickly so they feel its a last effort to survive. If it can't get away, it'll bite. It's the exact same thing that any animal would do, but because its not soft and furry, people think its evil.

I can understand being more afraid if you live in an area where venomous snakes are a bigger problem, but the same goes for them. Give them space the way you would any animal and they'll be just fine. They aren't there to attack, they just want to find food and a safe place to curl up. Same thing my cat does. (y) In fact, a cat can scratch you up while playing worse than most snakes bites would be.

After the one attacked me on my lawn mower ,I hate snakes .He came out from under the guest house for no reason except to attack me .He was safe and sound under there .I did not see him until it was to late .A gash in my leg almost 8 inches long and then I ran over him with my lawnmower after he jumped up at me the second time .One dead snack and stitches for me .Police had to come out and make sure it was not poisonous .Cop even said the snake was bigger than any one he ever saw .That is terrible Mike ,but funny also :)

I enjoy watching them but if I'm in an area where there are venomous ones I will be very careful to give them a wide berth. Rescued one Gardner snake from a crow on a bike path once. The crow had him on the ground and I raised my arms at the crow and he took off. I walked over to the snake and he was not hurt so kind of tried to nudge him off the trail and he turned around and came after me like he was a giant Cobra w/his mouth aiming at my foot snapping.

Snakes are awesome creatures that eat bad rodents And we have some some grass, Bull and rattler snakes hanging around these parts. One time when me and the puppies were down by river, Poppy accidentally stepped on baby Rattler snake and squished it's head. Poppy was fine but snake was killed. Then another time after coming back from river, my poor Bear dog's neck swelled up five or more times Normal and looked very strange. After a day and a half Bear was fine and swelling went down.
Many times at the river we run into rattler snakes. Dogs know better now and if anything stick in the water looKS strange or like a snake, they take a big jump BACK!

And every spring I get snakes in and around the ponds, especially the bottom pond where baby fish hang out. Sometimes the odd little fish just disappears. One year I was able to catch the grass snake in big net and walked a couple blocks down and threw him into the creek.
