I have some suspected hybrids in my parents pond now. They’re all the natural brown-green color of carp. I think they’re hybrids because I have always been able to tell the difference between goldfish and koi very easily, but these guys I struggle with. They’re bodies are shaped more like goldfish, but the way their faces look and the way their heads connect to their bodies look more like koi. My dad keeps a heavy cover over the pond, so I haven’t ever fished them out.

I’m no expert, they could be hybrid, grass carp, or just plain carp. Post a pic, we love to learn new things, and the experience to tell is on here! ( I’m pretty sure we have an expert or two!, just not me!)

Koi-Goldfish Bastard Child from my parents pond. Has tiny tiny barbels. Kind of the facial features of a koi, with the body of a goldfish, a little taller/deeper and more sunfish-like, less like a true torpedo-shape like a koi. There’s a bunch of them in the pond. This one is one of the smallest in there.

if you find some you like, they might just be the answer to a ponder who doesnt want to worry about overpopulating the pond, or caring for fry. it seems they are actually even hardier than koi or goldfish varieties. get bigger than goldfish but nat quite as big as koi...might just be the perfect pond fish........take a look!
I’m planning a little experiment of my own, I’m gonna build a large cage inside my pond and put a bunch of female butterfly koi in it with a bunch of make shubunkins. The idea is when they spawn the eggs will fall out of the cage and into the surrounding pond where they’ll be safe from the goldfish.
Should make for some pretty cool hybrids.
