I don't have a bottom drain or a skimmer .A swimming pool net works wonders .Only thing I would worry about with a thinner line is the unknown factor .A rock falling in the pond a planter basket that you have plants in and the roots from those plants .I have replaced 3- 45 mil liners because of dogs and moles

Welcome. I too am new and about to incur the cost of a good liner. I didn't see if you posted type or size. I decided to play safe and look for 45mil EPDM liner. I found a really good deal on some commercial carpet underlayment that I will use as an underlayment for the pond. I have been looking inline mostly but because it is so large and heavy you could save dome cost by finding it local. I think I actually saw on on ebay that was pickup only local to Ohio if I see it again I will let you know.
