Can cattails be placed bare root in pond?

I read a study they did about cattails in a pond with just the thin pvc liner...the roots did not puncture the liner i will try to find it
This is where you don't want to believe everything you read on the internet . aquascapes and other pros all have a video or two showing where cat tails had over grown and punctured liners

We visited a pond on a pond walk once where they were replacing the cement pool - cattails had pierced the cement.

I think one thing to remember is there are many varieties of cattails - I have some dwarf cats that will barely out-compete the watercress in my bog. The native cattails that grow around our natural ponds here will take out an asphalt road if they aren't controlled.
