Two things I know for sure about my hyacinths: they definitely have enough heat ( a cool summer day here is less than 105) and they definitely get enough sun. I think I will try putting a couple in a partially submerged pot near the waterfall and see what happens there. Are water hyacinth nutrient requirements very different from cattails and taro?

No, they all use the same nutrients, But cattails and taros do ok with some salt where Hyacinths don't, also the closer the hyacinths are kept tobether the more they will grow and bloom, when the get seperated they don't ususlly do good at all.

It started to rain here around 1:00pm, a hard, driving rain. Went out to check when it slowed down a little at 4:00, and couldn't believe it! Every tub with water plants was overflowing, one that I had emptied yesterday (5" deep) was overflowing, and the turtle pond (300g. Rubbermaid stock tank) was so full that the turtles could almost get over the rim! We got at the very least 5" of rain in three hours. The entire back yard is a swamp: it wouldn't surprise me to find goldfish spawning back there!!! :goldfish: :goldfish: John

I have a great weather station set up in the back yard, measures everything. So even if they say frederick got xx rain, I can look at what actually hit our land.
