I hope you have never had to find yourself in that situation.
We visited Florida quite a number of years ago - Tampa and Miami- and I found that if we stayed within a couple of miles of the coastline we felt quite safe, but when we ventured inland, we felt quite vunerable. Hard to explain.

I just got back from a tour of my city, there were lot's of places I didn't feel comfortable in. Not going downtown is an option, let the bad guys win I'll just stay where I feel comfortable. It sucks.
