Salt is the original treatment our forbearers used way back in the 1900 and before
1)Salt that is safe for use in treating fish should contain as few additives as possible. Pure vacuum dried salt, medicated fish salt or plain old cooking salt are acceptable. for use.
However table salt contains too many additives for use in the pond or QT systems infact. thee use of salt in the quarantine tank is best as it eases the load on the kidney of the fish, which is vitally is important when your kpoi or goldfish has dropsy and or problems with bouyancy
Solt may also be used in a short term salt bath good for ridding the fish of any parasites prior to going in your pond
Note*
Do not use salt with Anesthetic, Formalin,, zeolite or Roccal as you will find that it reduces the effectiveness of Roccal use only the dosage suggested for at 1/2oz per gallon imperial/or US equivulent
2) Malachite green has a use as a bactericide or fungicide, but it can also be effective against some body parasites.
We normally use Malachite in conjunction with formalin which is used to kill parasites, it does so by removing the mucous layer on your fish as most adult parasites burrow below the mucus layer.
Note*
Every time you remove the mucous layer during treatment of fish remember that fish are prone to the risks of bacteria and fungal infection
Why because the mucous layer is part of the fishes defense system.
Malachite may also be used along with Propolis to paint any wounds by Parasires and fungal infections for those of you that have never used Propolis before, it is by product of bees and is what keeps hives healthy , it has since found its way into treating fish wounds
3) Formalin It removes the mucous layer that harbors the parasites, malachite green is traditionally used in conjunction with formalin .
Note*
It is a very toxic substance thus great care is required when using it do not sniff the open bottle of formalin and always wear gloves when using it also protect your eyes .
If your formalin has turned cloudy or has white cystals on the bottom then it is unsafe to use on your pond
Do not use Formalin with salt.at a Ph of 8.5 things can turn toxic.
3) Superverm is used to eradicate Gill and Skin flukes. Dosage - one treatment of 11ml per 1000 gallons however do not use in a goldfish pond as Superverm is deadly to goldfish
3a) FlukeM by Kusuri is another good fluke medication .
4)Potassium permanganate or PP as we know it, is very effective as a pond bactericide can be used as a net'equipment disinfectant/
Note* Low water temperatures make treatments less effective and sometimes dangerous for the fish. PP however can be used at all water temperatures.
It will not only lower bacteria but will also help to eradicate protozoan infections such as Trichodina..
Make sure that the crystals are completely dissolved in hot water before it is introduced into the pond so it is best to prepare the solution in a plastic container then be allowed to stand for half an hour before use .
PP should never be mixed with other chemicals wait at least a week if you have been usig them and make sure you do a substancial water change to be on the safe side.
Note**It is not to be used in strong sunlight, hot weather,
5) Sterazin P can be effective against Gill flukes and Skin flukes. It is best used at temperatures above 15c.
Sterazin P is most effective when used with salt
Note* Treat on days 1,3,6,8 and 10. Sterazin P is one of the safest treatments especially for the less experianced amongst us
6) Acriflavine is used as a bactericide. It can also be used topically to treat a wound.or as a disinfectant it can be use inconjunction with Formailin and Malachite, it can also be used in conjunction with salt as a very effective treatment for many of the minor problems our fish get in the pond
It is an ideal product for use in QT. Dosage
7) Chloramine T is used as a bactericide and to treat bacterial gill disease.
It can also be effective in the treatment of White spot Costia and Skin flukes.
However to be effective for the treatment of fluke infestations, then several treatments are required intervals that depend on the water temperature, as the life cycle of these parasites is speeded up as the water temperature rises.
Note* I have not put in any dose rates for chemicals simply because of the differences between our respective messurements i;e Imperial and US gallonage .
So when using any of these chemicals make sure you check out our respective dose rates on the bottle or container these chemicals are held in

A lot of great information here, but I think that it should be emphasized (I am sure that Dave will agree) that medicating an entire pond should only be done as a last resort. Quarantine tanks are the best venues for treatment of any fish health issue for several reason.
1. The dosage can be accurate. Knowledge of the exact volume of water to be treated is necessary. Many pond owners do not know the EXACT volume of their ponds leading to either under or over treatment.
2. Quarantine tanks enable optimal observation of the fish being treated.
3. With most medications being quite strong, the treating of an entire pond will subject those fish that are healthy to unnecessary stress. This could result in other health problems developing.
4. If the pond being treated is an eco-system pond, considerable damage can be done to the myriad micro-organisms that are resident. In the case of anti-bacterial treatments, biofiltration can be severely compromised.

Not quite true Meyer many of us koi keepers are a canny bunch and acctually are accutely aware about knowing the exact volume of water to treat in our ponds .
This is because when we finished the build of our ponds we would employ a water meter to measure the amount of water going into the pond and filters thus giving us the exact volume of water to treat
But I agree that unless someone had first read about the hobby and knew to employ a water meter then the average pond keeper wont have done this.
Personally we run Shorham QT tank with bottom drain, filter,Blaggdon 2,000 wet/dry pump and 15 watt Kockney Koi UV-C and venturie.
The only time we would treat the pond as a whole is if all our koi have an infection which is a very rare occurance , however it appears that many pond keepers do not have the luxury of a QT tank and thus would have to treat the pond as a whole thus causing damage to the ponds eco system and filters .
So in reality a QT system is a must this we both agree on perhaps one of us should do a thread on how to create a working 400/500 gallon QT tank dont you think

See link to similar model to our own :-

Howver the photo doesnt do it justice its 6ft long 4ft deep and 3ft wide not the Jap matting in the filter it a;lso come with a scolloped style filter material
