be careful with water lilies as they can easily have 3' diameters re leaf cover. If you cover the entire surface without auxilliary aeration (wfall, aerator), you may induce a low oxygen situation, especially in the summer if your temps get hot, and that will affect your fish.

Too, best to keep water lilies IN their pots so you can manage their growth. Setting them free to roam your pond won't end the way you want it.

They will take over, Saw a post a while back, someone using a back hoe to pull lilies out of the bottom of their pond.
Even mine in pots get too heavy to get out without a lot of struggle, if they jump the pot, ie send some roots and tubers out.
