Addy have you ever tried the scare crow motion detector sprinkler in defense of the blue heron ?
I have so many plants that are constantly blowing around it would not work. It would go off constantly.
the net is a wide weave 3ish feet above the water it does not bother me or bother the growth of the lilies or iris.

I've met so many people who tried the scarecrow approach - two common results: 1. they would forget it was on and get themselves wet and 2. the heron would get accustomed to it and learn to avoid setting it off. They are patient hunters that will sit still for hours waiting for the moment to strike.

I have hours of cam recordings of them stalking up to the pond. Takes around 45 minutes to cover 50ish feet. Then they stalk the pond one slow step at a time, then wait for a fish never moving.

Since I put up the net they now just fly over, every day they fly over.

Net is the only prevention. Sucks, but no other choice. And yes, I have been the victim of the scarecrow many, many times.

Opened my pond yesterday and fish came up and took some food for the first time since Oct/Nov. I can't go 3hours without stuffing something in my face.
