New to Koi ponds this summer and surprise....babies hatched today (12/06/2010).
What a surprise, and in the middle of a real cold spell. Babies are in the shed with an electric heater, I am looking for any good "parenting tips".

Thanks, Mike

Welcome to the forum
Go to the home page and read up on Koi Spawning you will find all the info you want.
I start my fry with first bites right out of a packet
If you can raise the brine shrimp that would be better for them

Thanks Phil,

I have had my hands full this past week keeping the "kids" warm. It has been very cold here in Florida, would have never guessed that my first hatch would be in December.
So far so good, so many in the tank you can hardly see the bottom.

Wow, they are tiny! Thanks for posting pics!

What kind of setup do you have there? I'm hoping for some babies this year now that I'm learning what to do with them. I could have had some this summer but the eggs got eaten before I could find out what to do. Sure wish I'd found this site when we moved here!

This is highly unusual for this time of the year. If you can, start some brine shrimp hatcheries and feed them live food.
This is what I feed mine for the first 6 weeks. DrCases idea of First Bites is also a good source of food to get them started.

30 gallon tote with an electric heater, air pump and a few air stones. When we noticed the eggs last week (they were all over the plants), we removed the plants from the pond and placed them into the tote. After they hatched a few days ago, I removed the plants from the tote. As soon as the fry are large enough to safely net, I have a 150 gallon tank ready to transfer them into. Gotta love the internet, I've learned alot in 1o days!
