I like your approach to your pond, everything natural. When I started my pond 8yrs. ago my plan was to never use any chemicals. If you find a pond in the wilderness it is always crystal clear. I live in NW Ind. my pond is always crystal clear. I never have done a water change or major cleaning of my pond. If it's not broke don't fix it. I started with a 7200 gal. pond and last year increased it to 19000. My pond has been running non stop for 8yrs. I have never used UV I have never had a manufactured filter or skimmer. The only things I buy is pumps. Yes I have hair algae and I am glad. I think hair algae is a good mechanical filter and it is a plant and plants are very beneficial to a pond. This year I made a floating island to increase my filtration and shade. My pond is located under 3 trees. I do remove a lot of the leaves the ones I leave make good fertilizer for the plants. I have 90 plus Koi ranging from 20" to 3". I try to tell new pond builders to be patient and leave it alone.

Have not had any problems with pond for a good 10 or 12 years now. There is lots of big plants in my pond that do take big drinks, also the water evaorates quickly when we get those hot dry winds so then the pond gets topped off with fresh water. Being doing it this way for many years now. Sometimes I think people disturb there ponds way too much, and that really can get in the way of trying to balance the pond. Like I said before, used to use good bacteria and Shac Ponder, have not needed those products for years now.

My first couple years of ponding it, I had some trouble here and there, made the mistake of having too many floaters one year, long time ago, found that they can choke pond to death slowly, use sedges mostly now cause they clean better than any other plant in the pond, read that in National Geographic. Too many lillys can act like a blanket and smother and over heat pond too. Learned lots over the years. Learned trees and caterpilllers are real good for my pond too, some people just don't understand cause they don't have trees and caterpillers maybe, maybe they just did'nt study them for years like I did. :)

Nature gave us ponds and trees together, never seen a natural pond in nature with no trees. Many years ago when I was in my early twenty's, someone asked if I wanted their goldfish. It was getting late in the year and winter was coming soon, they said if I did'nt get the fish they would freeze to death. I went to get the fish, and could hardly find the pond because so many leaves had fallen. Then there under the tree was this little fish pond, no bigger than 50 Gallon, bottom of pond had a good ten inches of leaves, just laying there at the bottom. As I studied this little pond I was amazed, no pump, crystal clear but golden water, and big fat healthy goldfish. Never forgot that little pond.

Hello Dave! Nice to hear from you, good to see there are other like minded people out there! :) Everybody will get some string or hair algae from time to time, my koi have eatten most of the "green algae rug" down to nothing now. Everything is falling in the ponds from the trees right now, and the caterpillers are back in full force, caterpiller dung is falling all over the deck from the trees, looks like tiny black grains of sand. The pond water is turning a little golden from all the dung and little bits of chewed leaves, and I have placed catch nets in the water ways to help catch the tree litter that is falling in.

My big yellow flag water iris grew again, it is the biggest iris I have ever saw in my whole life, on land or water! It must be over three feet tall now, and should reach about to about 6 feet tall by summers end. Who ever heard of a iris growing to 6 feet tall? My wool grass bull rush (native grass) is a nice large clump now too. The big koi are constantly hungry, and the big orange koi is so big this year, when she turned sideways yesterday to swim up on this grass to get at food lodged there, I was shocked to see how big she grew again, she must have a waist close to 16 inches round!! She does not look fat but man is she strong, and she can throw lots of water over the pond with that big tail! :)

The caterpillers are here in full force, thousands are currently munching on the greenest tree leaves. The caterpiller dung is falling everywhere, too many trees in this neighborhood and too many in my yard, they just keep popping up everywhere, wild trees nobody planted but just came like weeds years ago, and 20 years ago my hubby said let them grow, they are just small, so I did and now they are too big for just me to take down.... so the caterpillers help keep the trees from taking over my whole yard, but trees are nice for shade, but a hassle to clean up after.

If you have lots of trees you may also have lots of caterpillers. The caterpiller dung is very concentrated and darkens the pond water every spring like clockwork. The water in some of my pictures appears a darker shade of yellow, but still very clear. The water plants and fish seem to not mind the dung, and I think it is like concentrated pond peat and actually good for the pond as it naturally dyes the water a golden Color and the plants in the pond seem to really start growing well after the caterpiller dung arrives... just look at how my yellow flag iris in the middle pond has exploded with growth! The water may appear even darker today as their is a really black cloud hovering over the city right now!

Tomorrow I will talk about my sister pond, wait till you see it, and I tell you all about it, it's a strange sight to see!!

OK, my raw vegan sister has a pond! But she does not weed or anything cause she eats all her weeds in the yard!!! I keep wanting to pull out the weeds but she won't let me!! So today their she was, outside planting flowers in between the weeds. I told her if she does not control her food (weeds) they will choke out the flowers, I think she is thinking about it, but I doubt that she willl get rid of the weeds around the pond, she says it's all her food and she eats the grass too!! WEIRD I know, but what can I do??

I gave her a piece of my yellow flag that I had started from last year, it is growing nice in her pond now, I told her to just let it float and secure the one end to the side of the pond to prevent it from blowing around. It has a large root matt and it is floating quite well!!

So here is my "extra strange but lovely" raw vegan sister.....

Today a special parcel came in the mail, from a land far far away. Puppies had a good smell of the package, as it traveled many many miles to get here, and puppies were smelling the parcel carefully, to detect "pee wee" sized scents from the parcel! (He he)
As soon as the parcel was opened, I found a cute little miniature Bear, and out came mysterious strange little stones with little rugged cross shapes. I told my hubby that they are said to have a mysterious force about them, and it is said they will protect the person from evil. My hubby likes them and picked one favorite fairy stone to carry with him all the time! :)

And a Very Special BIG thanks to the sender for the exciting mysterious stones....

Thanks JW, and now that he is getting so much better, he is not as camera shy, and new upper mouth is looking much much better, almost normal looking from the right angle. Hubby will get touch up plastic surgery this fall, and he sure has come a long long way since the big cancer was removed during the 15 hour surgery last September. He is able to eat lots of food now, no longer on a liquid diet, and has not smoked or touched the bad tobbaco since September. I never thought I would see the day where he would be able to eat a chicken dinner again, but every day he continues to improve and now able to eat and swallow more and more food. Hubby came home tonight from work, he has been working out of town for more than a week working hard, and he had a nice home cooked supper. Life is good once again, hubby healthy, and Poppy just follows him around and sleeps with him every night when he is home! :)

Favorite nefew came to town again had a nice long walk by the South Saskatchewan river, where the trees are very old cottonwood trees with strange shapes and bumps, and the forest floor is covered in long green grass. I am going to scavence a nice piece of driftwood next time I go for by the pond...

That would have been a nice picture of my nefew, too bad, but I got a nice shot of Poppy! My nefew just comes to see my puppies, he loves them and they are always excited to see him. We had a good walk that day!

Nice bird Addy! Good deal too! I like that blue and I have a blue living room too, but I want to repaint it again and freshin the room up.

Today by the pond, sky was overcast and it looked like it might rain, but never did. The yellow flag water iris is huge and getting ready to bloom, but will grow even more! I think it is about four feet tall now, will bloom, then it will grow to over six feet by summers end!

These photos of the three connecting ponds were taken from the house windows this morning....

Wow! Where have I been?? Lost in the garden again, and my fish are constantly starved, the big orange fish just swims around with her big mouth open, eating every thing in sight!! My water Iris is just about in full bloom now, and the land irises in the yard are all blooming so very pretty. My fingers are all worn out but I can't stop now, too much I want to do this year, go lots of plans in my head. I am working on a ever expanding padio by the ponds, it is made of 50 pound square dark grey concrete blocks, and I want to get just five more cement blocks to add to one end, to which no end is yet in sight.... work, work, work, slave to the puppies, fish and garden, the story of my life these days! :)

Oh, one more thing, the caterpillers are everywhere, except in my screen shelter, and the pond water is turning quite dark these days, as a result of all the caterpiller dung!
