I dug some up, very few, our rocks are mainly shale.
We hauled some from penna where we have a lot that has field stone on it
Hauled some from a rock dump area near my house, a house they tore down. Mainly concrete but some nice rocks.
Bought 6 pallets of rocks

Watch for them, sides of roads, fields, a pile in someones yard they want removed. Construction sites.

The man who built our pond brought the rocks to us from his dad's farm. Addy is right, lots of field stone here. Local garden centers often have a relationship with stone people who will help you pick out the right stone for your pond. Also, the big stores like Home Depot have stone as well, but it's pricier and the selection is mainly for paving, landscaping, or stepping stones.

Got mine from a concrete/rock supply company close by for $5. a pick up load and got to hand pick any size from nice big ones to smaller. Wore hard hats they gave us and picked to our hearts content. That was several yrs ago and it's prolly gone up in price now to maybe I guess $10. Lots of concrete companies sell all sizes of rock, gravel etc.

We have tons on all our rivers and creeks here. When I'm out walking I bring home rocks I find along trails and roads.

LOL! I'm a sucker for a nice rock! Don't have a lot of "wild" ones [what we called them when son was little -- wild ones were OK to take; tame ones were on private property, so weren't OK to take :) ]. Arkansas, just north, has TONS of rocks, but don't know how many trips it would take to get enough. Hubby says it's illegal to get rocks off side of the road in AR...

They are still building houses in my neighborhood so I went and dug them out of the empty lots or as they were digging the foundations I would go grab rocks that were dug up. It was a nightly thing when I was building my pond. Hauled all my rocks in the trunk of my wifes Honda Civic, that car pulled through quite nicely. When we were finished hauling all the rocks the next year I ended up getting a truck, my wife was telling me we no longer need a truck the pond is finished. How wrong she was, I still go out and get rocks.

Make friends with some local farmers! Seriously, pull up to their house, knock on the door, introduce yourself and tell them you are building a pond. MOST of them will have a nice rock pile somewhere that they would love to get rid of for free or very cheap.

I went out to my aunts house, every spring when they are plowing the fields, they pull rocks out of the field and have themselves a nice size pile in the back corner of the field.

M,

Do you have any rock quarries or gravel/sand pits near you? If you do, stop in and get in good favor with the operator. They will probably let you take some miscellaneous rocks home for free or give you a reduced price on a small load.

There are several sandpits near me. They are mostly concerned with the sand, gravel and the mud rock or river rock. But, they also pump up some larger stones that don't really fit into any of those categories. They used to let me have a few five gallon buckets worth. These weren't huge rocks, but they were quite interesting. Some of them had actual fossil records stored in them (imprints of shells and some plants/leaves). All varieties of colors and shapes. It's worth the asking.

No rock quarries. Guess we're not in the right geological area. But that does give me some ideas. We have a friend from our Boy Scout troop who is a botanist and works @ the LSU Ag. Center here [specializes in pecan trees -- now I'm craving me some pecan pie -- yummmm!]. I'll see if he has any contacts or resources I can use!

Would love to be turned loose in a big rock pile [hubby, rolling his eyes 'cause he knows it's true :) ]!
