Called Louisiana Wildlife & Fishers Department this morning and asked about deterring Herons. Agent listed all the usual techniques then made a point of saying that dogs are the best deterrent. Some dogs are specially trained to chase away herons, egrets and cranes.

LOL! All we have are cats, and they are indoor cats. But I have this mental picture of harnessing one of them to stake out the pond! Problem is, ours would likely take one look at a GBH and....goodbye kitty cat! :nailbiting:

When the heron would come to my pond and my one cat would see it she would run after that thing and as it flew she would run underneath it making that weird guttural cat sound w/ her tail waving fiercely! She was not afraid at all and think she would have tried to catch and eat it if she could.
Winner, winner heron dinner

my lil yorkie would love to chase them, but she is too darn tiny to leave outside. She loves to hunt, hunts everything.

My dog hates birds on the lawn. I think the Robins intentionally land, in hopes of a futile chase.
