A forum is for sharing knowledge, experience, presented in a reasonable manner. There is 1000's of ways to build a pond, filter that pond etc.
What I have seen is if someone disagrees with another members comments, that is when the spitting match begins. If someone disagrees with a members post, disagree nicely, there is no need for aggression, anger, sarcasm, snide remarks, putting down etc.

Offering comments, help is just that offering. The member does not need to follow what you say, even if you think you are right. They have the right to make the choice on how they are going to build, take care of the issue without being put down, sarcastic remarks etc. If what they do does not work, well they went though a learning curve, many times their choice will work for them.

Knowledge is welcome, experience is welcome, presented decently.

Shows like Pond Stars and Tanked are a great way for people with no prior exposure in the hobbies to become interested in them.
Are they perfect? No, but they're not supposed to be. They're supposed to be entertaining and intrigue someone to maybe try out the hobby.
Cut them some slack.:)

By the way, have you all noriced Waterbug is ling gone? This forum does have a way of treating knowledgeable members in a way that they leave. Charles posts are also almost non existent. If you want to have a forum full of worthless garbage happy posts, good for you. Just expect, as is has happening, for all the knowledgeable members to leave! And then the forum will be a total joke.

That's not correct, dielselplower. The reason they don't post here much anymore is because ponds are not complicated. Both of those people are very knowledgeable, but for anyone it can become tiresome repeating themselves. All their knowledge is searchable on the form. I would get tired of repeating myself all the time on the same subjects.

This forum is about people, not just ponds.

No one here is a scientist, at least anyone that has decided to reveal that.
We're all just people with ponds that share different experiences and levels of knowledge.

There are a lot of very nice, friendly and supportive people here. That's what's important.

Usually it doesn't get too bad on these forums. dieselplower is one of the more...shall we say... "aggressive" members here, but we all have thoughts, opinions, and various experiences, so its important to keep everything friendly and informative. We all just have to remember we are here for the love of ponds, not to cause or be apart of arguments. If we see a discussion turning that way, the best thing to do is try to steer it into something more positive. One of the best things about a pond is that it can be very peaceful and stress-reducing, so we should carry that over into our conversations about them. (y)

I agree. I think people can see what motivates certain posters. I try to reply without making it personal, but still get to the bottom of that motivating factor. DP doesn't like AS - that's fine. I happen to like their products, their ponds, and their philosophy of pond-keeping. I don't really care if other people don't share my opinion, but I do care that things people say (whether about AS or any other topic here) are at least factual OR clearly just that one person's opinion, uninformed or otherwise. "Perception is reality" is so true - if people hear something repeated over and over, even if it's not true it suddenly becomes accepted. A new poster here the other day said something like "I know gravel on the bottom of the pond is not good" - that's when I think another opinion can give that person something to consider. I think it's also very informative to note that the one example DP finally gave of a clueless "Aquascapes certified master installer" (that's not a real thing by the way - someone made that title up) also happened to be a woman. Bias shines through. Some people consider pond keeping to be a manly thing and just don't like us girls messing in their manly business. o_O

I'm not afraid of different opinions. I'm not an expert on ponds by any means, but I am an expert on MY pond. So I can share with confidence what works for me. If other people read what I say and choose to believe it, fine. If not, that's OK too. But people who fear that sharing of different ideas confound me - what's their stake in the game anyway? Enjoy YOUR pond and if others choose to go a different route, why in the world would YOU care?

We happen to live in the Chicago area so our exposure to ponds and water features was Aquascape. That was a lucky thing for us - we were able to tap into a wealth of knowledge and experience and tour dozens of AS ponds and see the concept in action and in the end build a DIY project that we love. I can tell you right now if we had seen ponds with big free standing filtration units and things that required back flushing or filter pads that needed rinsing or water that required regular testing, we would have gone on our way without even considering a pond in our own yard. I definitely didn't need to add more tasks to my day. Our pond requires no daily care. We putter because we like to. But some people want a more active hobby, or want to raise koi for shows or have lots of big fish or whatever - good on them! I enjoy seeing those lovely ponds and hearing about those set ups, too. I just know that wasn't for us.

I love sharing with other people my love for ponds and water gardening and how it has been such a positive addition to our lives. Lots of personal things that I won't go into here, but life can be hard sometimes. There are days when the thought of sitting by the pond when I get home keeps a smile on my face. There is no better feeling than that! :)

I liked this weeks episode but do wish they explained some of their work. Think the answer to seemingly early release of the fish could be explained by editing. We really have no idea how long the waited. Tasks on the show move along very fast. Too fast. I bet they take more time than stated.

Agreed - for some reason these shows add the "we only have 5 days!" element to make it more dramatic. Those of us who love ponds would be OK if they took 8 episodes to build that trout stream and pond! But that's not the point of the show I guess. Maybe someday the audience will be there for that type of program.

It is correct. Waterbug has made his opinion of this forum very clear on other forums.

I enjoy this forum because it is like a group of neighbors sharing ideas over the back fence. That may be too pedestrian for some, but it fits my style. I may know something works without having any idea why it works, but I can still share the "what" without knowing the "why". I can share my bread recipe with a friend without sharing all the details about the chemical reactions that need to take place for her to have the same success. Some people enjoy the chemistry behind the process ( and I do love Alton Brown!) but some would rather say "I like what you have - how did you do it?" I made a brief foray into water testing and quickly realized it was boring - for me. So I stopped. Some people love that stuff. And that's great - share away! It's our individual differences and interests that make the world an interesting place!

It is correct. Waterbug has made his opinion of this forum very clear on other forums.

If he is, then I hope he is naming this forum by name.

Some people prefer technical forums, some people prefer friendly forums. WB may lead others here.
I've been a member of both types in the past. I prefer this one, it's just evolution.:D

There is absolutely nothing wrong with knowledge. Every one of us came to this forum looking for it, and I like hearing what you have to say when I ask a question. The thing is, you occasionally have a "my way or the highway" approach, and when someone disagrees you tend to get sarcastic or in some ways rude, like conversation that started this. You might not even intend for it to come off that way, but it does. I really don't know much about Waterbug, but it seems by reading your own comment about him, he was the same way.
