In situations where I'm unable to bring in equipment due to the site restrictions, but still need large stone(s), I use a variety of stone called feather stone. A boulder that looks like it should weigh around 600-700lbs, in fact weighs about a quarter of that, making them easy to move by hand. It's a volcanic rock, heavily aerated.
It might be called different names in different locales.

I believe it's also known as pumice.
John

Yeah, I think you're right, Haro. It's lightweight, but it's also pretty abrasive so gloves and long sleeves are a requisite when moving. Once it's in place, the abrasive nature of it isn't an issue.

Last year I was at a build where I used some of this stuff. I humped a monster piece of it (about 150lbs) to the tailgate of the truck. There was a nice looking woman walking her dog across the street. She stopped when she saw the size of the stone on my truck tailgate. I knew she was watching so I made a show of "pumping up", then I grabbed the stone and carried it into the backyard of the site.

When I came back around, she was still there, slack jawed. She commented that I was really strong and couldn't believe that I could lift that stone.

Not wanting to contradict her, I agreed.

The reddish rocks come from coral pink sand dunes, a place we rode our 4 wheelers in utah. If you walked back into the woods you found rock roses, (what we call them) but they are sand stone so can not be outside here in wet maryland.

For landscaping and retaining wall applications, you can't really beat the shape and size (not to mention low cost per ton) of armor stone. It can be handled with a tension grappler on the end of a backhoe or front end loader bucket.

It's also used for shoreline erosion control. Most places won't allow for the pouring of concrete into lakes, so if you want to stabilize your shoreline, you can use this stuff or galvanized cages that you fill with loose stone.

We don't have any of that here, they do look neat and I can see how they would work well.

These are my deck stones, including the water fall stone, which was a pita to lift into place, darn heavy.
The really rough looking stones where aquarium stones I bought in arizona, all different sizes. I have a bunch in my house tank. Also packed into boxes and hauled across country
