to go the uncovential way, on my mom's pond: never does a water change, except for adding water due to evaporation, has it way overstocked and has crystal clear water with excelent water conditions. just food for thought.

Talk about water changes I forgot to turn off the water and remove the hose.
It was in the pond over 12 hours.

I'm lucky my water is not chlorinated. I think my fish really liked it.

I used stress coat, it was sort of slimy, whenever I changed out my 175 gallon ciclid tank, to remove chlorine and it was supposed to help the fish.

most dechlorinators / dechloramines removers, liquids anyway, have a stress coat or stress coat enhancer, heavy metal neutralizers, in the mix nowadays!!..

All of these products have instructions on their use. You will have to read these for the brand you bought.

I only do water changes a few times a year. I just keep an eye on my nitrate levels. If they start to get too high, then I do a water change. If they are acceptable then I just fill to make up for evaporation.

The more fish per gallon you have, then the quicker your nitrate levels will rise and the more often you will need to change your water. Changing your water every week seems a little excessive unless you are very overstocked with fish.

sorry for bumping this old thread, but Im curious why we should do waterchanges at all? Assuming you have a properly sized and working filter and enough plants, what is it thats building up that would require water changes?

Id rather it be something you can actually measure and then decide to do a change or not, considering my pond is 50.000L and well water is unsuitable, changing just 5% every week would be costing me a pretty penny.

edit: just found this: "Avoid Changing Koi Pond Water if You Can"
In summary emptying a pond (even partially might be a bad idea).
