Blizzard warning here in Chicago too, starting at 2pm. It's already horrible out there. I haven't seen a car (or a snow plow) go past the house in at least half an hour. I am not going ANYwhere today. If it's as bad as they are now saying (up to 18" depending on where the lake effect snow hits), chances are good that tomorrow will be a snow day.

Here's my current pond view from inside the house where it is cozy...and this doesn't capture the blowing/drifting snow. I'm going to have to go out there and at least knock the snow off the pond de-icers at some point. The temperature is supposed to drop and stay cold all week, so I'm going to plug the high power one back in.

10 minutes outside was enough for me. :) I plugged in the big de-icer... knocked some snow off the pine tree branches next to the house (they are sagging horribly from the weight)... shoveled a little bit by the side door...slipped and fell into the snow on the lawn. I'm done. :p

Why don't you have someone come and put the outlet on a switch for inside the house .My son suggested it for me and installed it .This way everything including pumps are all on different marked switches .This way I can turn any thing off from inside if there is snow or a storm outside .The pumps are on an alarmed switch .I never heard of it before he suggested it .It was not a cheap item though 65 dollars. But without in in 2010 UI would have lost my fish in a snow storm because pump water was running out of the pond .The fish knocked the pump side ways on the crate and it was pumping out of the pond and when it got down to the pump that is when the alarm went off . That is when I decided after that to tie my pumps onto metal pipe in the middle of the pond .No more of it setting on a crate

Not a bad idea. I am not crazy about where the outlet box is at--it's behind some shrubs, so it's not the easiest to access, especially when the shrubs are covered in heavy snow. I also need to do some landscaping in the spring... there is a little low spot in the ground RIGHT behind the outlets/skimmer box, and that's where I lost my footing and went down sideways. At least I didn't go INTO the pond. ;)

They also moved up the official Blizzard Warning--it's in effect right now.

I slipped a couple weeks ago out front on ice but landed soft in snow bank too!

Currently -20 Celsius (-4 Fahrenheit) and Little Rio and me toasty warm in outdoor winter greenhouse, drinking coffee! Got food frying in oven, fresh chopped potatoes with fresh hot green peppers and onions, cooking on cookie sheet and PC Free From sausages in frying pan. Going to have 3 eggs too! Comfort food for cold day...

My son suggested it because the steps from the front porch can get slippery and he said you are not getting any younger and I sure don't want to get a call saying you fell down the steps .You can also buy a wireless one now .I saw it on the internet .Not sure how well it would work in colder weather .

Just cleaned out the driveway for the first time. It is truly horrible out. Visibility is very low, but basically zero when you have the snow whipping at your face. Drifting is making the snow pretty deep in my driveway, which is bad for snowblowing and horrible for shovelling. Sad that I'll still have to take care of the driveway 1 or 2 more times before this is over.

Today is Superbowl Sunday and it's raining so we are going to go shopping while everyone else is glued to the tube. We will be the only ones in the store after 3pm our time. Wonder if Costco will have lots of nice samples to munch on? We can check and see who is winning on their big tv sets.
Not into sports but since our Seahawks team is playing we have to peek in now and then.

I constantly sweep off back deck and steps, but I have a low spot out front that does not drain, and water gathers there on warm days and freezes at night. Going to try to fix that soon as spring gets herE by raising the two cement slabs a biT and will cut away grass from walking blocks to create better drainage.

I've got a low spot in my driveway where my well sticks out (yes my well for some reason is in the middle of the driveway, can't begin to tell you how dumb it is), but anyway, it always collects water and I slipped on it a few times when I was out there today.

Hey maybe they will give you more bargains for being there JW .JB that is why I hated living in NJ the snow and was tired of having an affair with my snow shovel every winter .Don't mind if we get it here it melts either that day or by the next day .Plus retired so no real place to go
